A man suffering from a burn inside his mouth. If you get a burn on the inside of your mouth, you are going to likely be weary of eating or drinking for a bit of time. The pain can make it difficult to go about your day, and it can alter your routine.

When it comes to managing the pain of an oral burn, you need to take precise steps to be able to keep your mouth clean and safe, as infections are always possible.

Here are a few steps to keep in mind if you are prone to eating food that is just a little too hot.

What to Do When You Burn Your Mouth

The first thing you need to do is take an antiseptic mouthwash and clean out your mouth by rinsing it. You want to do this as soon as you can following the burn to help rid your mouth of any bacteria that could lead to an infection.

Next, you want to take some type of an over-the-counter pain reliever that will reduce any swelling that follows. These are typically called NSAIDs, and include naproxen sodium and ibuprofen.

Eating after an oral burn needs to be done with care and planning. If you eat something that is hard or jagged, you could irritate the burn or cause it to reopen. If that does happen, however, there are quite a few benzocaine products that can help reduce the pain.

For any burns that are severe, cause blistering, become infected, or have more pain than you are comfortable with, you need to get in to see your dentist immediately. They can look at your burn to ensure that it didn't do any damage to your mouth that needs additional treatment.

Oral burns are common, but they do need to be protected and kept clean during the healing process. So please, contact us if you have any questions about managing your burnt mouth.
