5 Bits of Dental Trivia!

*Mammals (including humans) get only two sets of teeth – baby and adult teeth. In all other toothed vertebrates, new teeth replace old ones.

*Humans aren’t the only ones who can suffer from oral health problems. Since they don’t consume sugar, animals rarely develop cavities. Yet, about 80% of dogs and 70% of cats suffer from oral disease. By the age of six, almost all ferrets have gingivitis. Like humans, pets develop plaque, tartar, and periodontal disease. Common indications of oral disease in your pet include bad breath, a change in eating or chewing habits, pawing at the face or mouth, and depression. Proper dental care could increase your pet’s life by two to five years.

*Different animals have different amounts of teeth; armadillos have 104; cats, 30; dogs, 42; and pigs have 44 teeth.

*Boar, badger, and horse hair were used years ago for toothbrush bristles but were later found to be abrasive and harsh.

*People don’t chew up and down; they chew side to side just like cows chew.
