Do You Really Need to Sanitize Your Toothbrush?

Posted on 11/10/2019 by Dan Laizure
Do You Really Need to Sanitize Your Toothbrush?Your toothbrush is exposed to food debris and bacteria each time you brush. A simple rinse keeps toothbrushes clean. Let's take a look at the idea of sanitizing toothbrushes and when it may be a recommended thing to do.

Is Sanitizing Toothbrushes a Necessity?

Not really, we don't really need to sanitize toothbrushes. There is no research or data to show that not using commercially available toothbrush sanitizers or sterilizers is harmful for our oral health. Basic due diligence that people execute is sufficient to keep the toothbrushes free from bacteria.

Moist air favors bacterial growth. So long as the thoroughly rinsed toothbrushes are exposed to dry air without the bristles touching one another, that's good enough. You can, if you wish, use warm water for rinsing the toothbrush head, and shake dry before placing it in the stand.

It's also a good idea to replace the toothbrush every four months or so. Do not wait for the bristles to wear out completely. It's not a good idea to brush with worn bristles because they cannot clean teeth like how they're meant to.

Dipping your toothbrush in mouthwash for around ten minutes will disinfect it, and you may want to do that if your immunity is low or you're recovering from a medical condition. You may also do that if your toothbrush shares space with someone with lowered immunity. Or, simplify matters and use disposable toothbrushes till such time you've regained health.

If you wish to purchase one of those commercially available ultraviolet light toothbrush sanitizers, then buy only those that have been approved by the FDA. A UV sanitizer is not going to eliminate 100% of the bacteria. Also, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light may cause the bristles to deteriorate.
