Why We Use a Pick When We Check Your Teeth

Posted on 2/10/2020 by Dan Laizure
Why We Use a Pick When We Check Your TeethLet's face it. The metal pick we use in the office during your routine visits can be a little intimidating, especially to children.

However, there are many good reasons for us to use this simple, but sometimes scary, tool. Primarily, we use the pick to check for plaque on or around your teeth and gums, but there's more to it than that.

Is It Necessary to Use a Pick During a Dental Visit?

The simple answer is no but opting to forego this part of an exam can threaten your oral health. We also use the pick to test the strength of your tooth enamel, which can alert us when your enamel may be compromised and put you at a higher risk of tooth decay. In addition, we use the pick to check for cavities and is why the pick will sometimes stick in your tooth. Finally, we use the pick to measure your gums, in order to check for signs of gum disease.

Can I Use a Metal Pick at Home?

It's not recommended to use this tool at home, due to the training that it takes to use it safely. Metal picks, or plaque scrapers, are available in stores, but that's not because it's a good idea to use them at home. Using a plaque scraper without proper training can do much more harm than good. Additionally, there is no need to use a pick at home if your dentist is using one during your routine visits.

The bottom line is that that scary little metal pick is important for your oral health because it can help us detect issues early and prevent them from getting out of hand. So, the next time we pull out the pick, just remember we have your best oral health interests at heart.
