In a perfect world, our teeth would never develop any issues whatsoever, and we would all have perfect oral health. In the real world, however, that is almost never the case. In fact, you will probably find yourself needing to invest in some kind dental procedure at some point in your adult life, if not before. There are just too many factors that could go wrong to avoid visiting a dentist at all. That’s why you should make visiting us a regular occurrence! That way we can help you keep your teeth strong and in top condition, even if you do eventually end up needing something like a dental filling.
What is a dental filling?
A dental filling is a material used to, quite literally, fill the cavity (space) in your tooth that is left behind after the decay is removed, or after you experience an injury that chips or breaks your tooth. Most of us will need at least one or two fillings over the course of our lifetime. The good news is that the material used is durable and can last for many years as long as you take good care of your teeth. There are a variety of different options from which you can choose, too, in order to find the perfect dental filling for your needs. At Walla Walla Dental Care, we offer composite and amalgam fillings.
What are the different kinds of fillings?
The two most widely used fillings, and the two from which you can pick here at Walla Walla Dental Care, are composite fillings and amalgam fillings. Amalgam fillings are silver in color, and are extremely durable. These fillings tend to do well in the back molars where they are out of sight, as they can stand up to the pressure you exert while chewing but are somewhat unseemly if seen up close. That is why fillings in teeth that are easily viewable, such as your front teeth, are typically done using composite material. This is a kind of material that is tooth-colored and helps give you a natural look no matter where it is placed. It’s an aesthetically pleasing option that works well for many individuals.
How long does it take to get a filling?
In some offices, patients who find out they have a cavity that needs filling can have the procedure performed the same day! It is a straightforward dental procedure that does not take that much time at all. First of all, you will have the area to be worked on numbed using a local anesthetic. We will then thoroughly clean your teeth of any decay we can find. The cavity that is left behind from the removal of the decay will then be filled with one of the aforementioned filling materials (you and your dentist will decide which is the best option before the procedure begins). Recovery time is short and any discomfort short-lived.
