Porcelain Veneers

Woman smiling with perfect teethYour teeth are important. Not only do they perform essential tasks, including biting, chewing and aiding in proper speech, they also have an aesthetic function. Your smile is usually one of the very first things that people notice about you. So, when it’s less than perfect, you may find yourself wanting to hide it. Even minor imperfections make you self-conscious. At Walla Walla Dental Care, we want to give you back your perfect smile, and your confidence. For your minor imperfections, we offer porcelain veneers.

What are Veneers?

Veneers are thin “shells” that are bonded to the front surface of your teeth to cover over a variety of different small imperfections. Our veneers are made from porcelain, which provides you with numerous benefits. One of porcelain’s greatest benefits is that it can be custom tailored to perfectly match the color of your natural teeth. Porcelain is also fairly strong, stronger than composite resin, and can stand can withstand the forces of normal biting. With proper care, porcelain veneers can last upwards of 20 years or more.

What Can Veneers Fix?

Veneers can be used to fix a variety of minor dental imperfections, including:
•  Chips and cracks
•  Misshapen or uneven teeth
•  Gaps between your teeth.
•  Teeth that have undergone excessive wear
•  Discoloration that cannot be otherwise fixed by other professional whitening techniques, often due to trauma or even being born with discoloration

Getting Your Veneers

The process of getting your veneers is fairly simple, and takes two visits after your initial consultation. During your first visit, the affected tooth, or teeth, is prepared. What this means is that a small layer of your enamel is removed, which allows the veneer to sit naturally in amongst the rest of your teeth. A local anesthetic is administered to help ease any discomfort you may otherwise feel. After the tooth is prepared, we take an impression of the tooth, or teeth, and use a color guide that will help our laboratory to create a naturally colored veneer that will fit perfectly in your mouth. It takes approximately one to two weeks for your veneer to be made and sent back. If needed, we will provide you with a temporary veneer, but this is not always necessary.

Your second visit occurs after your veneer has arrived back at our office. During this visit, your veneer is first checked for fit and color, to make sure that it is comfortable and blends seamlessly with your natural smile. If everything looks good, we apply the veneer. This bonding process involves using an acidic gel to create a rough surface on your tooth. The gel is cleaned off, and the tooth (or teeth) is dried. Finally, the veneer is cemented firmly in place. Once set, no one will be able to tell that the veneer is there, and you are left with a beautiful, perfect smile.

Care for Your Veneers

Caring for your veneers is really no different than caring for your natural teeth. All that is needed is twice daily brushing and daily flossing, along with regular visits to the office for exams and cleanings. You should avoid biting down on anything exceptionally hard, including popcorn kernels, ice, writing utensils and your fingernails. Doing so can cause the veneer to fracture or break.

If minor dental imperfections have you hiding your beautiful smile from the world, veneers may be right for you. Call us today at (509) 525-4833 to schedule your consultation.
